Shanghai to host national embodied-AI robot skills contest

The October 23–25 Shanghai contest spans 9 tracks and 23 real-world tasks for humanoids, quadrupeds and wheeled robots — 1,000 teams expected.

Shanghai will host the 2026 International Embodied Intelligence Skills Competition on October 23–25, a national contest built to move humanoid and embodied-AI robots from demonstration videos into real work. Held under the guidance of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference organizing committee, the event implements a 2026 special action plan from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission for real-scene training of humanoid robots.

The format is industrial, not theatrical. Nine tracks and 23 events cover production manufacturing, inspection and analysis, maintenance, warehousing and logistics, catering and retail, medical and elder care, production safety, emergency rescue, and culture, tourism and education — with around 1,000 teams expected. Scoring runs on a 100-point system across four modules: task execution, embodied data collection and reflux, autonomous intelligence, and innovation, with differentiated coefficients for humanoid, quadruped and wheeled machines and for autonomous versus teleoperated runs, judged by a three-party cross-review panel. The stated goal: let industry pose the problems and technology provide the answers.

The stakes go beyond trophies. Each of the 23 events awards 10,000 yuan for first place, 5,000 for second and 3,000 for third, alongside special awards — and winning teams gain access to tens of millions of yuan in intended investment plus financing guidance. Preparation runs in three phases: scenario co-building by September 30, simulated production-line setup and training by October 10, then the competition itself. Afterward the program shifts into normalized operation through 2027, including a national simulation contest, a national real-scene training contest, and an embodied-AI exhibition at WAIC in July 2027.

The hosts are the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Industry Association and the China Electronics Technology Standardization Institute, with Zhangjiang Group and Lujiazui Group as co-hosts. The contest sits inside the GDPS 2026 Global Developers Pioneer Conference and takes place at Zhangjiang Science Hall; the official site is ieic.gdps.org.cn.

Read it as industrial policy staged as a sporting event. Chinese cities are already setting deployment quotas — Shanghai wants 8,000 humanoids in factories by 2028 — and this contest adds the missing machinery: standardized real-world tasks, scored runs, and data collection built into every attempt, so each competition directly feeds training data back into the models. The robots are not just competing; they are generating the dataset for their own next generation.
