Musk: Optimus gets AI5 chip in April 2027, and the hand is still the hardest hardware problem

Tesla's AI roadmap for Optimus: an AI5 brain with 10x AI4 compute by next April, a hand still in development, and unscripted demos due in months.

Tesla plans to integrate its next-generation AI5 chip into the Optimus humanoid in April 2027, Elon Musk said on the company's third-quarter earnings call on October 21. The chip will deliver "an order of magnitude more compute, AI5 versus AI4," Musk said - the biggest near-term jump in the robot's onboard intelligence and the lever Tesla expects to unlock more general, unscripted behavior.

The hardest hardware problem is not walking or lifting - it is the hand. Optimus engineering lead Konstantinos Laskaris said the hand is "one of the most challenging hardware areas," with bespoke gears still in development for durability and reliability, while most of the rest of the electromechanical system "has converged." Musk added that human hands self-repair and pack sensors into soft, compliant skin; a robot hand must survive constant wear, grasp delicate objects and keep its sensors intact all at once.

An unscripted milestone may arrive soon. Musk said a video of Optimus "doing things that are not pre-programmed" could appear in "maybe a month or 2" - a date investors and roboticists will treat as the first public evidence of whether Optimus can generalize beyond staged demonstrations.

Data remains the other bottleneck. Unlike its vehicle fleet, Tesla has no existing army of robots to learn from, so the company is building an "Optimus Academy" where robots practice a wide range of tasks, with "on the order of 10,000 or 20,000 bots" needed for self-play training, Musk said. AI chief Ashok Elluswamy described a "huge reinforcement learning cycle" spanning simulation and the real world. Early external deployments will target industrial work - "dangerous repetitive tasks" run 24/7 - and CFO Vaibhav Taneja said Optimus unit costs are trending toward where Cybercab costs will land, without naming a figure.

Musk framed Optimus's progress as the product of three multiplying levers: electromechanical dexterity, AI software and AI chip hardware. "At some point in the future, the number of humanoid robots on Earth will exceed the number of humans," he said.
