XPeng's IRON solid-state battery enters small-batch production, executive says
XPeng says the solid-state battery for its IRON humanoid has entered small-batch production, with the robot itself still in the pre-SOP stage.
XPeng vice president Gu Jie said the solid-state battery for the company's IRON humanoid robot has entered small-batch production and rolled off the line, while the robot itself remains in the pre-SOP stage, before the start of production. The update, dated October 28 in China, is the first concrete production step for IRON's battery since the robot's unveiling.
That matters because the battery was a headline claim at IRON's November 2025 unveiling, when XPeng described it as the first humanoid to carry an all-solid-state battery, but the company's September 2026 production-line announcement did not mention the battery at all. A small-batch battery line does not by itself mean the robot is in mass production, and Gu's update does not disclose the battery's capacity, energy density, supplier, or how many cells or robots are in this batch.
The robot side of the timeline is further along but still pre-mass-production. XPeng said on September 8 that the first IRON to complete assembly on its automated line in Guangzhou walked off on its own, with more than 80 per cent of core processes automated. The company has set out mass production for late 2026, deliveries in the first half of 2027, and European promotion in the second half of 2027.
The question now is conversion: whether a small-batch battery line can scale to the volumes, yields and costs a production humanoid needs, and whether that happens in time for the late-2026 mass-production target. Until XPeng discloses volume or performance figures, the honest reading is narrow: the battery has moved from a launch specification to a small-batch production item, and the robot itself has not yet reached SOP.
