A humanoid clocks in as "one-day store manager" at an Anta shop in Chengdu
Shoppers on Chengdu’s Chunxi Road got a surprise this week when a humanoid robot showed up as the "one-day store manager" at an Anta sportswear shop.
The stunt is part of a growing wave of humanoids appearing in Chinese retail — greeting customers, posing for photos, and testing whether bipedal robots can handle the chaos of a real store floor.
It’s marketing, of course. But every public deployment is also a field test: navigation around unpredictable crowds, safe interaction with children, and hours of continuous operation are exactly the capabilities service robots need to prove.
From factory floors to fitting rooms, humanoids are auditioning for jobs in public. The reviews, so far, are written in foot traffic.
